Mumbai, Dec 9 (UNI) Catholic Secular Forum (CSF), a city-based non-governmental organisation, today lambasted West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya over his alleged remarks on Lord Ram and the controversial Ram Sethu.

Mr Bhattacharya, also a senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader, had reportedely said that ''Ram is a figment of a poet's imagination and that Ram Sethu, an ancient bridge linking India with Sri Lanka also known as Adam's Bridge, is a natural formation.'' Stating that the national interests cannot be sacrificed at the altar of political expediency of UPA alliance partners like the DMK or the CPM, the Forum called for restraint by all the parties concerned in favour of national interests.

''Lord Ram is an integral part of the Indian psyche, besides being considerd a God by the majority. Nothing should be done to vitiate communal harmony and damage the secular fabric of the country,'' the Forum said.

Pointing out that a government publication, tabled in Parliament, said the Ram Sethu or Adam's Bridge may be man-made, the CSF urged the government to respect the feelings and sentiments of the Hindu community and others, who wished no damage to the structure.

According to the Forum, irrespective of its origin, which is a mystery or whether it was made by Ram or Adam, the fact that the bridge was more than ancient needs to be considered.
