Chamba, Dec 9 (UNI) Former deputy prime minister and senior BJP leader L K Advani today hit back at the Congress over All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Sonia Gandhi's statement on Gujarat CM Narender Modi, saying the Congress was the merchant of death and not Mr Modi.
Addressing a public meeting at Chamba in the state, he said Mr Modi was not the merchant of death but the Congress, which had failed to take effective measures to check entry of terrorists in the national capital.
Mr Advani, who was reacting to Mr Gandhi's statement, accused the state government of failing to initiate steps to provide security to the people despite several incidents of terror in various parts of the country in the last few years.
Referring to the UPA Government's failure to hang Afzal Guru, the main accused in the Parliament attack case, he said this was one of the failure of this government.
Accusing the central and the state governments of failing to check price rise and widespread corruption, he said the Congress had failed on fronts during its tenures both in Himachal and the Centre.
Mr Advani has deplored the proposed nuclear deal with the US and said this would compromise the country's independent nuclear programme.
Addressing a public meeting in Santokhgarh constituency of the district, he said the BJP was against the deal because in lieu of getting nuclear rule from America, the government was giving an assurance of ''not repeating a Pokharan type test''.
''Since we have two neighbours who have nuclear capabilities, we need to have more powers to counter these nations with whom we have already fought a number of wars'', he said.
Mr Advani said while the neighbouring nations would the right to conduct nuclear tests at any time without seeking any permission from anyone in the world, India's position would be compromises.
