New Delhi, Dec 8 (UNI) President Pratibha Patil today favoured a strong network of workers under the social welfare departments in the states to bring about a social change and uplift the women and children in the country.
Addressing a delegation of Chairpersons of Central and State Social Welfare Boards under the leadership of Central Social Welfare Board Chairperson Rajni Patel, the President in her speech said these organisations under their respective state welfare boards should launch a nationwide movement spreading awareness about the programmes and policies that could change the lives of women folk and bring about overall development.
She said this movement has to instill a sense of self confidence among the women. A few women were doing exceedingly well in high places but the overall picture in the country was somewhat different and things had to change for better.
She said the Central Social Welfare Board must be the guiding spirit to its state counterparts who had a lot of responsibility to improve the women's lot.
The meeting lasted less than half an hour where Central Social Welfare Board Chairperson wanted speedy legislation on issues like Women's reservation and concrete steps to end the instances of female foeticide. The chairpersons of the State Social Welfare Boards had attended a two day Annual General Body convened by Mrs Patel.
