Varanasi, Dec 8 (UNI) Resident doctors of Sir Sunder Lal Hospital of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) today called off their strike.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by hospital Superintendent Prof V K Shukla.

The indefinite strike entered its third day today paralysing the medical services.

The resident doctors were protesting the alleged misbehaviour by the relatives of a patient with medicos on November 29.

They had gone on strike the next day, but resumed work after getting assurance from the BHU administration.

The protestors were demanding the arrest of the accused and adequate security to them.

Resident Doctors Association (RDA) vice-president Dr Avinash had earlier said they would continue the strike till any action was taken against the accused.

Meanwhile, a large number of patients had started leaving the hospital to take shelter in other health centres.

Sir Sunder Lal hospital has a capacity of 1200 beds, but nearly half of them had been vacated due to the strike.

The fact finding committee, which was set up by the hospital administration, had submitted its report yesterday.

Many social, political and other organisations had condemned the resident doctors strike and urged them to resume work in the interest of the patients.
