Jammu, Dec 7 (UNI) Tension today gripped the University of Jammu here after the police resorted to lathi-charge on a group of students', injuring several, including girls, sources said.
The students were reportedly demonstrating in the campus against the laxity shown by the varsity authorities in meeting the demand for safety of students in the university.
Several students, including girls, were beaten up by the policemen. ''There should be women cops to deal with girls,'' shouted a student, as protestors raised slogans against the police.
A group of outsiders had allegedly entered the boys' hostel of the Jammu University and thrashed the inmates of particular religious community, who reportedly had beaten up an outsider in the campus on Wednesday.
Thereafter, a group of students yesterday protested in front of the Administration Block. As nobody from the authority came out to talk to the protestors, they damaged the office of the Vice-Chancellor.
Sources said three students were also suspended by the authorities after the incident.
However, no official statement was given to the media over the ongoing ruckus in the varsity as yet.
Even the Police Control Room said it had not been given any information regarding the lathi-charge in the varsity campus.
