Chandigarh, Dec 7 (UNI) Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda today stressed the need for creating mass awareness to effectively check the menace of female foeticide in the state.
''Success of any law largely depends on awareness for the cause,'' the Chief Minister said while talking to mediapersons after launching an awareness campaign against female foeticide organised by 'Janmajey Jan Kalyan Charitable Trust' at his residence here today.
Mr Hooda, instead of formally flagging off the 'Rath' tolaunch the campaign, opted to himself drive the vehicle and appreciated the efforts of the social organisation in launching the campaign.
He said Haryana was the only state in the country to record two convictions of doctors under Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique (PNDT) Act. The doctors along with technicians were sentenced to imprisonment and fined.
Haryana had also recorded two more convictions under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act sentencing the doctors involved along with the patient.
He said a number of schemes had been implemented by the state government to enhance the educational and economic status of girls.
Mr Vinod Kumar Misher, General Secretary of 'Janmejay Jan Kalyan Charitable Trust', said that during this campaign, signatures of people would be sought with a commitment that they would neither indulge in female foeticide nor let anyone commit it.
He said initially this campaign would cover Haryana and later it would be implemented in other parts of the country.
Those present on the occasion included Principal Secretary to Chief Minister M L Tayal and Haryana Congress president Phool Chand Mullana and MLA Ms Geeta Bhukal.
