Gold ornaments smuggling racket unearthed

Chennai, Dec 7 (UNI) The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) today unearthed a racket of smuggling gold ornaments through passengers by seizing six kg of gold ornaments and 6,500 Singapore dollars worth Rs 50 lakhs, from 13 passengers who arrived at the airport here.

DRI Additional Director-General P Babu said here the modus operandi of the gang was that passengers from Singapore, mostly workers, would be recruited and small packets of gold ornaments would be handed over to them along with some Singapore dollars for smuggling into Chennai.

Upon reaching Chennai, they would hand over the contraband to the gang members waiting outside the airport, for a monetary gain.

He said five gang members, waiting outside the airport with a list of passengers, were secured for interrogation.
