Congress leaders arrested in UP for possessing fake currency

Malda, Dec 7 (UNI) Two Congress leaders from the district's Alipur village were arrested near Uttar Pradesh's Aligar police station area early today and fake currency notes worth Rs 13.75 lakh siezed from their possession.

Malda Additional SP Sujit Sarkar today informed that Fakira Banu, Alipur Congress Panchayat Pradhan and Liyakat Ali, an influential Congress party leader and a businessman belonged to the district's Alipur village under Kaliachowk police station. Non-bailable arrest warrant was issued by Aligar police.

Meanwhile, Left Front district secretary Jibon Moitra said these two were long wanted in various cases, but they had been absconding.

An Aligar police team would be arriving at Malda tomorrow to get the arrest warrant cleared by Malda District Court, Malda SP Satyajit Bandhopadhyay said.

Meanwhile, BSF DIG V K Tomar said that in the last one year, fake currency worth almost Rs 14 crore had been siezed from the district and 488 persons, including 224 Bangladeshis had been arrested in this connection.
