New Delhi, Dec 6 (UNI) The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day today for lack of quorum after the House completed the short-duration discussion on the misuse of funds provided under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

As soon as Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh got up to reply to the debate, Mr Ajay Maroo of the BJP said there was no quorum in the House and the rest of the discussion and the reply could be taken tomorrow.

There were only 16 members present in the House, including two from the BJP and four from the Congress besides Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Pachauri, Panchayati Raj Minister Mani Shankar Aiyer and Dr Raghuvansh Prasad Singh.

At least 25 members are needed to complete the quorum.

After the matter was raised by Mr Maroo, Mr Pachauri said normally, the issue of quorum was not taken up in Rajya Sabha.

However, Mr P J Kurien, who was in the Chair, said he had to go by the rules. If there was no quorum, he could not proceed with the deliberations.

He waited for three minutes as per the rules and when the quorum was still not complete, he adjourned the House till tomorrow.
