Mumbai, Dec 6 (UNI) Lakhs of followers of Dr B R Ambedkar from across the country, converged on Chaityabhoomi here today to pay homage to the late leader, considered as the architect of the Indian Constitution, on the occasion of his 51st anniversary of death observed as ''Mahaparinirvan Din''.
Chaityabhoomi, the memorial of Dr Ambedkar, is situated at Shivaji Park near the Arabian sea.
Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil visited Chaityabhoomi last night alongwith Mumbai Police Commissioner Dhananjay Jadhav to oversee the security arrangements. He also offered floral tributes to the late leader.
A function was organised at Vidhan Bhavan and Mantralaya where Mr Patil and other senior bureaucrats garlanded the portrait of Dr Ambedkar and paid their respects.
Similar functions were organised at the offices of political parties as well.
