Hawala money seized from Hong Kong bound passenger

Chennai, Dec 6 (UNI) Air Customs officials seized nearly Rs 15 lakh worth of Hawala money from a Hong Kong-bound passenger at the Anna International airport here today.

Air Customs Commissioner C Rajan said Euros, worth Rs 3.25 lakh, was seized from the hand bag of a passenger, Abdullah Khader Ghani (46).

The officials also recovered Rs 4.5 lakh worth Swiss Francs kept in a special cavity in his waist belt and seized another Rs 7.75 lakh worth of Euros concealed in the anus.

The officials also seized Rs one lakh worth of Indian currencies from Ghani, hailing from Thondi in Ramanathapuram district, when he was about to board a Singapore Airlines flight, enroute Hong Kong, at 2345 hrs last night.

When questioned by the Customs officials on the nature of his trip, he gave unconvincing answers.

Following this, his journey was cancelled. He was subjected to thorough questioning till this morning and he admitted to carrying foreign and Indian currencies.

He said a group, involved in a Hawala racket at Mannady area in North Chennai, had asked him to handover the currencies to a person in Hong Kong, for which he was promised a sum of Rs 50,000.

Customs officials arrested him and seized the currencies.

A special team has been formed to nab the group involved in hawala trade.
