J&K security situation improves, violence up in North-east

New Delhi, Dec 4 (UNI) The overall security situation in Jammu and Kashmir has shown definite improvement during the last few years, while terrorist incidents have shown an upward trend in the North- Eastern region during this year upto October 31, the Lok Sabha was informed today.

The number of incidents in the Naxal-affected states continue to be the same during this year up to October 31 as compared to the corresponding period last year, Minister of State for Home Affairs Sriprakash Jaiswal said in a written reply.

He said there have been some terrorist incidents in the hinterland, which was a matter of concern.

The government's policy is to counter the challenge posed by terrorism by way of a multi-pronged strategy which focuses on political, security and developmental fronts, the Minister said adding that the government is willing to talk to all those groups who abjure violence.

On the security front, the counter terrorism measures include effective border management to check infiltration across the borders, deployment of Central forces to aid state police forces in areas prone to terrorist violence, heightened vigil and security arrangements in and around vital installations, strengthening of intelligence gathering among other things.

Regarding the developmental front, a variety of sops have been taken to accelerate developmental activities in the areas affected by terrorism and extremism, Mr Jaiswal added.
