Srinagar, Dec 4: A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan posted at the Srinagar Raj Bhavan committed suicide early today, official sources said.
Panic gripped the heavily guarded Raj Bhavan here when a BSF jawan, identified as Ravi Ranjan, of 97 batallion shot himself with his service weapon, the sources said.
Before he could be shifted to hospital, he succumbed to his enjuries they said, adding it was not immediately known why the jawan took the extreme step.
The trend of committing suicide among the security forces, engaged in counter-insurgency in the valley, has not stopped despite introducing Yoga and Art of Living by the authorities to help them to overcome stress.
More than 25 security personnel have committed suicide in the valley during the past one year. About a dozen others, including some senior Army officers, were killed by their colleagues in the valley during the same period.
Family dispute and working conditions are reportedly the main reasons behind these deaths, the sources said.
