Chandigarh, Dec 4 (UNI) A two-day All India Mayors' Conference, beginning here on December 8, will focus on strengthening initiatives for ''gender friendly cities'' and good governance.
Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Union Territory Administrator General (Retd) S F Rodrigues will inaugurate the conference on December 8 while Haryana Governor A R Kidwai will be the Chief Guest at the morning session on December 9.
About 100 delegates, including 65 Mayors, have confirmed their participation. A number of eminent experts will address the conference.
Gender equality and women empowerment has been chosen as the focus issues as it is one of the millennium development goals adopted by the international community and is critical in the context of improving urban governance and making cities more liveable.
The conference will also focus on sanitation, clean and safe drinking water, greenery and improvement in the condition of slums and pollution free environment in the big cities.
