New Delhi, Dec 3 (UNI) Several programmes were organised in the capital on the occasion of World Disability Day today.

National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People organised a function, presided over by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, at India Gate to draw the attention of the people towards the issues confronting the disabled people in the country.

Disability organisations, disabled people and school children also participated in the function, whose theme was 'Ek Nayi Umang'.

In another event, Commonwealth of Learning(COL), Canada, President and Chief Executive Officer John Daniel announced that COL would collaborate with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in disability-related research for conceiving and launching various schemes for the disabled.

They were addressing a two-day International Workshop on 'Disability Related Research : Cross Disability Concerns of the Developing Countries in Asia' , beginning today, on the IGNOU campus.

They added that IGNOU has a special role to play in this regard due to its information and communication technology facilities and large scale operations which are impossible for conventional system of education.

IGNOU Vice-Chancellor V N Rajasekharan Pillai on this occasion stated that this workshop will highlight the existing legal provisions for the disabled people to exercise their rights to life, education, employment and other social aspects. It will have the objective to observe the state of research in higher education institutions with regard to curriculum focusing on disabilities.
