No complacency on quota for disabled: Governor

Puducherry, Dec 3 (UNI) Puducherry Lt Governor Mukut Mithi today said the three per cent reservation for the disabled in employment should be implemented without ''any sense of complacency.'' Inagurating the celebrations to mark the 'International Day of the Disabled' here, Mr Mithi called upon the private sector to provide jobs to the physically-challenged as per the Disablities Act.

Listing out the technological developments which would benefit them, the Lt Governor said as majority of them could not have access to technology, the Welfare Department should keep a track of the latest aids and procure them for the disabled.

Presiding over the function Chief Minister N Rangasamy said steps would be taken to set up a welfare board for the disabled. He urged them to start self-employment programmes by availing loan through PIPDIC and Banks.

The administration was providing 1.5 per cent reservation for the disabled in government jobs, the Chief Minister said.

Welfare Minister M Kandasamy said the administration proposed to introduce an insurance scheme for disabled girl students from standard five from the next academic year. It would pay the premium on behalf of the students.

Vacancies of teachers at the school for the blind would be filled up, he added.
