Visakhapatnam, Dec 3 (UNI) Eastern Naval Command (ENC) Flag Officer Commanding-in Chief Vice Admiral Raman P Suthan today said the Navy Day celebrations were to commemorate the attack on Karachi Harbour during the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

Addressing a press conference on board INS Jalashwa here, the Admiral said this year also the ENC had planned a number of functions on December 4 to mark the event. Andhra Pradesh Governor Narayan Datt Tiwari would be the chief guest.

On granting the night landing facility at INS Dega, the airport maintained by the Navy, he said lack of personnel was acting as an impediment to extend the facility to civilian flights.

The shortage of manpower to man the air traffic, had been brought to the notice of the naval headquarters, he added.

The work on a supporting naval base close to the city was under progress, he said.

The Operation-Demonstration off Ramakrishna Beach tomorrow evening would field 19 ships, 18 aircraft and two submarines. The aerobatics display by 'Sagar Pawan' of the Indian Navy would add colour to the function.
