Let up in 'winged-visitors' at TN coastal sanctuary
Thanjavur, Dec 3 (UNI) There has been a considerable decrease in the flocking of migratory birds at the Kodiakarai bird sanctuary at Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu this year.
The Sanctuary along the Bay of Bengal coast has been a favourite destination of migratory birds from Artic and Antartic regions, Russia and the Europe.
''Rare birds used to flock the region with temperatures falling 'in the other end' of the world. However, there is a let up in the number of winged visitors with north-west monsoon continuing in Tamil Nadu,'' sources at the Bird Santuary Research Organisation said.
Normally, rare birds flock the sanctuary during October-January.
The reduction in the number could be attributed to climatic changes.
There is a proposal to set up a research centre near the Sanctuary with Central assistance, sources added.
