New Delhi, Dec 3: On a day when a quartet of teenagers hogged limelight, 12- year old Akash Iyer of Chennai created a major flutter as he defeated International Master (IM) Ravi Hegde even as top seeded players Surya Sekhar Ganguly, Jones Gwain (England), Abhijit Kunte along with local hero Parimarjan Negi registered easy wins on the opening day of the Parsvnath Commonwealth Chess Championship here today.
In an highly eventful first round, nine-year old Vaibhav Suri and 15-year old Dhara Gupta defeated former Indian team members, IM D P Singh and Anup Deshmukh respectively.
The trend of minor upsets continued as 12-year Rucha Pujari held highly experienced IM G Rohit to a draw.
Local veteran D S Negi also held ninthth seeded GM Neelotpal Das. However, the top women players, IM Harika, WGMs Nisha Mohota, Tania Sachdev, Eesha Karavade&Swati Ghate scored easy wins over their rivals to sail into the second round with full score.
The championship has attracted a record 282 entries in a very strong field, consisting of 13 Grandmasters (GM), five Women Grandmasters (WGM), 35 International Masters (IM), seven Women International Masters (WIM), from 11 commonwealth countries; Australia, Bangladesh, England, Malaysia, Maldives, Pakistan, Republic of South Africa, Singapore, Sri-Lanka, Trinidad and Tobago and hosts India.
A total of 56 foreign participants from the member commonwealth countries have created new records on all the front in this 20000 dollar prize fund tournament with the winner pocketing 4000 dollars.
