River Chambal, deep gorge in HP claim 29 revellers lives

Morena/Shimla, Dec 2 (UNI) The river Chambal and a deep gorge of Himachal Pradesh claimed the lives of at least 29 people of two marriage parties in separate road accidents last night, police today said.

Sixteen people of a marriage party, including eight women died on the spot and a young boy was injured after their jeep, which was coming from Nirmand to Kumarsain in Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh, veered off the road and fell into a gorge.

A young boy injured in the accident has been admitted to a government hospital at Khaneri where the doctors described his condition stable and out of danger, the DSP said.

The district administration has announced an immediate relief of Rs 6,000 each to the kin of the dead and Rs 4,000 each to the injured, Rampur SDM Daleep Negi told UNI.

In another accident 13 people, including three girls, drowned when their jeep, returning from Agra to Jaura in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh, fell into the Chambal river, about 25 km from the district headquarters, adjoining Dholpur in Rajasthan. The bodies were fished out this evening.

The jeep plunged into the river breaking the railing of the Chambal bridge connecting Rajasthan with Madhya Pradesh.

Both incidents came to notice when the other members of the marriage parties started looking for the missing vehicles of their convoy of vehicles.

Senior officials from the respective administrations reached the spots and monitored the rescue operations.
