Mumbai varsity emerge overall champs in Ashwadmedh

Nashik, Dec 1 (UNI) Mumbai University won the overall championship of the 'Ashwamedh 07' 11th Maharashtra state inter university sports tournament, organised by the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU), which concluded here today.

Dr Dayanand Dongaonkar, Secretary General, Asson at Indian Universities was the chief guest of the function K B Patil, Vice-Chancellor, North Maharashtra university.

Jalgaon, and Vinyak Dalvie, Jt secretary to the Governor of Maharashtra were the guests of honour on the occasion Dr Rajan Velukar, Vice-chancellor, YCMOU and Dr Pandit Palande pro-vice-chancellor, YCMOU, presided over the function.

The Ashwamedh championship team event (men) was won by University of Pune whereas the women team event was won by University of Mumbai. The athletic general championship (men) was won by Shivaji University of Kolhapur, whereas the women category award was won by University of Mumbai.

The Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik won the award for best march past as well as the award for the best extingent in rally. The award for best discipline was bagged by Dr Balasaheb Sawant Konkan krishi vidyapeeth Dapoli.

In his address on the occasion, chief guest Dr Dayanand Dongaonkar stressed the need to judge where Maharashtra stands in sports at the national level. Further stating the importance of team events, he advised the students to concentrate on studies along with sports.

He also informed about various projects undertaken by his department for development of sports and youths.

Vinayak Dalavie admired the YCMOU vice chancellor Dr Ranjan Velukar and the organising committee for successful organisation of the games. He appealed the sports persons to win the Maulani Abdul Kalam trophy, the Inter University Sports Championship trophy, which Maharashtra could not win since 1986.

On the concluding day, the event, which was inauagurated by President Pratibha Patil on November 27, witnessed on AIDS awareness rally. All the 2500 sports persons and citizens various dignitaries from the participated in the rally.

Results: 1. University of Mumbai won both the basketball (men) and (women) championships; 2. Dr B A M University, Aurangabad Volleyball (men), volleyball (women) University of Mumbai; 3. University of Pune Kabaddi (Men), University of Mumbai Kabaddi (women); 4. University of Pune Kho kho (women).

Two thousand five hundred students from 19 universities participated in the event. The next Ashwamedh games will be organised by Mahatma Phule Agriculture University, Rahuri at Rahuri.
