Mahanta lambasts Assam govt for failure on law and order front
New Delhi, Dec 1 (UNI) Former Assam Chief Minister and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) President Prafulla Kumar Mahanta today lashed out at the ruling Congress government in the state for its failure in maintaing law and order.
Briefing newsmen here today, Mr Mahanta described the incident in which a tribal girl was stripped by a mob on November 24 in the state capital as a ''slur'' on society.
He said the incident could have been avoided if the State Government would have taken a serious view of the State Intelligence report that the proposed Adivasi agitation could take a serious turn and this information was given to the State Government well in advance, he claimed.
Mr Mahanta held the State Government squarely responsible for the situation, saying the Congress, in its election manifesto, had promised Schedule Tribe status for the Tea tribes in the State.
''Not only that they have also assured that konch Rajbanshi, Modak, Maran, Ahom and Chutia tribes would get their due right of being granted Schedule Tribes status.'' But, the party, which is also in power at the Centre, did not keep its word.
He said this became evident from the reply of the Union Ministers for Tribal Affairs and Home given last year and on November 26 this year respectively in Parliament, he added.
