Ahmedabad, Dec 1: Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi will address public rallies in Gujarat today as a part of her party campaign for phase one election for which voting is scheduled to be held on December 11. Sonia will address a public meeting at Jampada village of Chikhali taluka of Navsari district. Later, she will address another meeting at Jasdan village of Saurashtra. In the first phase, election will be held in Saurashtra and South Gujarat.
Earlier, UPA Chairperson had addressed a women"s rally in Gujarat"s Anand District in November. After the communal riots in the year 2002, Chief Minister Narendra Modi had won the 2002 elections from Maninagar constituency.
The Bharatiya Janata Party managed to win 127 seats, while the Congress party was able to win only 51 seats. The Janata Dal (United) and independents won two seats each. This year, in the second phase of elections scheduled to be held on December 16, Modi will be facing Congress candidate Dinsha Patel.
Earlier, Patel won five Assembly elections and four Lok Sabha elections from Gujarat. Counting of votes will take place on December 23. Over 36 million voters will elect the 182-member Assembly in Gujarat as the term of the State's Legislative Assembly is due to expire on December 26.
