Assam: Indefinite curfew continues in Rangapara

Tezpur, Dec 01: Indefinite curfew continued to be in force at Rangapara area of Assam's Sonitpur district for the fourth consecutive day today.

District Deputy Commissioner Kamal Goswami informed that the situation was under control in all the three subdivisions, which had witnessed unrest.

He said curfew was relaxed for three hours today from 1300 hours.

Curfew was relaxed for an hour on Thursday and two hours yesterday.

Though no official announcement had been made, the curfew was likely to be lifted soon as no fresh incident was reported. Adivasis, mostly tea garden workers of the adjoining areas, gathered in a large number near Rangapara on Wednesday and went on a rampage, damaging a police station.

Police had to use lathis and lob teargas shells to bring the situation under control.

The indefinite curfew was clamped on Wednesday evening.

There were no fresh report of tension from other parts of the state after days of disturbance following clashes between adivasi protestors and locals at Beltola area of Guwahati on November 24.
