Mumbai, Nov 30 (UNI) Western Naval Command Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Vice Admiral Jagjit Singh Bedi today said the Indian Navy has initiated measures to maintain strong vigilance against terrorist activities.
''In the post 9/11 scenario, sea routes could also be used for terrorist operations, and so, a system of Maritime Domain Awareness has been established,'' the Vice Admiral said.
Talking to media on the eve of Navy Week-07, he explained that the system was useful for the automatic identification system and registration of merchant ships.
''We are setting up a chain of the system to collect and compile information here from Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, Gujarat and coastal areas. The compilation of all the pictures will be done under this system which will be completed by 2008,'' he added.
When asked about the induction of aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov, the he replied that the ship was expected to join the fleet by 2009-10 and added that in the meantime, INS Virat would be given further lease of life.
''We would have been happy to see the Gorshkov inducted much earlier,'' he added.
He said the construction of 27 ships and six submarines were underway in the yards at Goa and from 2012 onwards, every year one submarine would be added to the fleet.
The Vice Admiral said orders had been placed for 16 MiG-29 aircraft and helicopters. Brahmos would be installed on all the ships and currently, it was on Rajput and Ranvir, he said.
