New Delhi, Nov 30 (UNI) Defending champion Indian Oil and contenders Namdhari XI recorded contrasting victories to move into the semi finals of the 18th Shastri hockey tournament here today.
Indian Oil pipeed Air India 1-0 while Namdhari XI routed South Central Railways (SCR) 4-0 in their last league matches.
Completing the last four line up were last year's runners up Bharat Petroleum and Punjab and National Bank (PNB). The two teams played 3-3 draw in their last league assignment.
In an inconsequential match, Indian Airlines drew with Army XI 5-5.
The match between Indian Oil and Air India produced a fast paced game but the teams failed to score till the 54th minute.
The deadlock was broken when Olympian Didar Singh converted a penalty corner for Indian Oil and after that defending chmpions held on to the lead for the remaining 16 minutes.
Namdhari's struck twice in each half to end SCR's resistance.
Gurvinder Singh put his side ahead in the 15th minute and Gurcharan Singh made it 2-0 eight mnutes before the lemon break.
In the second session, Karamjit Singh (38th) and Balwinder Singh (63rd) scored a goal each to complete the tally.
Bharat Petroleum and PNB played a drawn match which enabled both the teams to qualify for the knock out stage.
For Bharat Petroleum, who trailed 0-1 at the breather, Irshad Ali (38th), Paramjit Singh (41st) and Amar Aiyamma (67th) scored a goal each.
Yudhveer Singh(13th), Banmali(57th) and Pramod Kumar (62nd) were the goal getters for PNB.
Indian Airlines(IA) led 3-1 at half time but failed to hold on to the lead and eventually drew with Army XI 5-5.
Sameer Dad, Arjun Halappa, Jaswinder Singh, Jaskaran and Kulbhushan Singh (one each) were the scorers for IA. E Lakra (2), Jerum Kujur, A K Majhi, A K Ekka (one each) were on the target for Army XI.
Indian Oil will take on PNB in the first semi final tomorrow.
