Kendrapada, Nov 30 (UNI) The Bhitarkanika forest officials have arrested 36 fishermen and seized 5 trawlers from their possession for fishing illegally inside the prohibited zone under Gahirmatha Marine sanctuary.
Rajnagar Mangrove Division Forest Officer A K Jena today said the forest officials noticed 5 fishing vessels catching fish illegally near Babubali.
The forest officials overpowered the fishermen, seized the mechanized fishing vessels and about 20 quintal fish catch from their possessions.
All the arrested belonged to Balaramgadi in Balasore and Dhamara.
They were produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class court at Pattmundai under Wildlife Protection Act,1972 last Wednesday which remanded them to jail custody.
This was the second seizure of fishing vessels intercepted for unlawful intrusion into prohibited zone for fishing operation this year following imposition of ban on fishing inside the Gahirmatha in Bay of Bengal.
On Saturday last,the Bhitarkanika forest officials had arrested 17 fishermen and seized 4 trawlers. Last year the forest personnel had seized 41 trawlers and arrested more than 80 fishermen for illegally fishing inside the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary.
