Kozhikode, Nov 30 (UNI) In order to help farmers reeling under debt, the Kerala government will start procurement of raw coconut in five districts -- Kozhikode, Kannur, Malappuram, Alappuzha and Kollam -- tomorrow.
Kerafed Chairman M Sukumara Pillai and Managing Director N Ravi Kumar told reporters here today that Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran would formally inaugurate the procurement programme organised through the Kerafed.
They said the raw coconut would be collected at Rs 11 per kilogram at 43, 16, 15, 11 and six centres in Kozhikode, Kannur, Malappuram, Alappuzha and Kollam districts respectively.
The agency, which used to procure copra, decided to accept raw coconut mainly to help the farming community, they said.
The government also proposed to extend the procurement programmes to Iddukki and Wayanad districts, they added.
