New Delhi, Nov 28 (UNI) The Rajya Sabha was today adjourned twice following vociferous protests by the Opposition members over the AIIMS Bill which indirectly seeks to remove AIIMS Director P Venugopal by fixing the age of superannuation of the Institute Director at 65 years.

The House was adjourned first for 15 minutes and then for half an hour as Opposition members refused to allow the House to take up the Bill, which has already been passed by the Lok Sabha, for consideration.

As soon as Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan announced that the Bill be moved for consideration, members of all the Opposition parties, including the BJP, Janata Dal (United), AIADMK, TDP and Trinamool Congress moved to the well of the House protesting against the Bill.

They shouted slogans stating that the government was trying to destroy the premier institute.

Some AIADMK members even tore off the copy of the bill.

Mr Khan tried to convince the members to participate in the discussion as the Chairman has allotted one hour time for the Bill.

''Why are you giving up your right to participate and vote on the Bill?'' he wondered and urged members to go back and asked them to express whatever opinion they have against the Bill.

However, the agitated Opposition refused to heed to his repeated requests. BJP member Rudranarayan Pani started moving towards the treasury benches, but congress leader Rajiv Shukla stopped him.

Following this the chair adjourned the House for 15 minutes.
