New Delhi, Nov 29 (UNI) National Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Kiren Rijiju in a letter to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman today demanded immediate action against those responsible for the stripping and assault on women in the course of a peaceful protest in Assam on November 24.

He said the All Adivasis Student Association of Assam (AASAA) staged a protest dharna on November 24, 2007 at Beltola, Guwahati, Assam. During the protest, violence erupted which lead to a situation where women were stripped, beaten up and molested publicly.

There was uncontrolled violence going on since then across Assam. There have been cases of serious human rights violation, he said.

The letter said that this incident had rattled the conscience of human morality and dignity of women in the society. Women occupy a high status in North Eastern India.

The situation demanded an immediate inquiry and stringent action against the perpetrators of the incident, the letter added.
