Moily to visit Assam

New Delhi, Nov 28 (UNI) Congress President Sonia Gandhi today directed AICC General Secretary Veerappa Moily to visit the violence hit State of Assam to make an on the spot assessment of the situation.

AICC Spokesman Shakeel Ahmad told newspersons here that Mr Moily will go to Assam tommorow and on his return report to Ms Gandhi about his observations.

''Mr Moily will make an on the spot assessment,'' Mr Ahmad said expressing concern at violence in the Congress-ruled State.

Mr Ahmad, who is Minister of State for Telecommunications and Information Technology, said the local administration has taken some steps to curb violence and announced compensation to those who were injured or dead.

Mr Moily will see what else can be done to help the people and ensure law and order.

Asssam has been in the grip of violence since November 24 when a demonstration by tribal students clashed with locals. Tension continues to grip Guwahati as group clashes continue even though Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has warned of stern steps.
