Kumble cautions team of lapses

By Staff

Kolkata, Nov 29 (UNI) Despite the smooth six-wicket win over Pakistan in the first Test at Feroz Shah Kotla, Team India skipper Anil Kumble today cautioned his team against several lapses.

''We should have tightened the screws earlier. We let them off the hook in the first innings at Kotla. There are a couple of areas we could have done better,'' Kumble said at the customary media meet on the eve of the second Test at Eden Gardens.

After being five down for 83, Pakistan went on to sore 231 in their first innings.

''We could have finished their first innings earlier. Then we also lost a few wickets in a heap. These are eares we need to correct,'' he said.

''We also didn't necessarily bat to our potential. We could have got more runs in our first innings. We built partnerships. But then wickets fell in a heap. One run out (Sachin Tendulkar) cost us a couple of quick wickets. And we were in a spot of bother. It's different that everyone contributed at some point or the other, but the lapses happened,'' he said.

''This is something we need to take note of. I think we will be able to do it this time as we are aiming to wrap up the series here in Kolkata and achieve the first series win over Pakistan on home soil,'' he added.

Pakistan has never lost a series in India since 1979-80.
