Timber worth Rs 6 lakh seized in Kashmir

Srinagar, Nov 28 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir Police today claimed to have seized smuggled timber worth Rs 6 lakh and arrested two people in this connection.

Acting on specific information, police raided the house of Nazir Ahmad Wani at Waripora in Handwara area of Kupwara district and seized 50 cu ft illicit timber of kail, costing about Rs one lakh.

A case has been registered and investigations have begun.

However, the accused fled from the spot and a manhunt launched to nab him, police added.

In another raid, police received tip off that a large quantity of timber brought illegally from Rajwar forests by smugglers, Abdul Rashid Lone and Gul Mir, was lying on the road leading to Kawnar.

A police party immediately rushed to the spot and seized 250 cu ft illicit timber of Deodar worth Rs five lakh.

Both the timber smugglers were arrested and a case registered, police said.
