School teacher self-immolates for dowry
Shillong, Nov 28 (UNI) A lady teacher in Meghalaya allegedly committed suicide by self-immolation after being harassed over repeated dowry demands.
Police today said after setting herself on fire yesterday, Saraswati Barua(28) succumbed to her burn injuries today.
She received 95 per cent burnt injuries and was admitted to a city hospital here where she died early this morning, Superintendent of Police A R Mawthoh told reporters.
Mr Mawthoh said a dowry case has been registered against the in-laws, including the husband.
The teacher married to a city-based lawyer Kiran Barua, was forced out of her in-laws' house after she refused to meet their demands.
In her suicide note, Ms Barua alleged constant torture by her in-laws. She added her in-laws, especially her husband Kiran pestered her parents, for dowry. Due to constant pester and harassment the young bride took the extreme step, family sources said.
