Chennai, Nov 28 (UNI) The third edition of the J K Tyre Junior Racing Cup, with a change in grid format for the first time, will be held at the MMSC Race Track at Irungattukottai over two double-header weekends on December 1 and 2 and on December 22 and 23.
Tournament coordinator Vicky Chandhok told reporters here today that like last year, 16 Formula Maruti Racing cars (800 cc) will form the grid.
The ten race event would be held over two rounds, with each srpimd consisting of five races. The first round of five races would be held on December 1 (two races) and 2 (three races) and the second round comprising the remaining five races would be held on December 22 (races six and seven) and 23 (race 8 to 10).
The unique feature of this year's event, which was launched two years back to serve as a launch pad for young talents to graduate to the J K Tyres National Road racing championship, the grid would be reversed after the first race.
Under the format, which was followed world wide to ensure that no single driver dominates the championship, the starting grid would be reversed for the next race with the top finisher starting at number six in the grid and vice-versa, to avoid qualifiers for each races.
This meant that there would only be two qualifiers for the total event, one at the start of the first race (December 1) and the second at the start of sixth race on December 22 and reverse grid would be followed for races two to five and seven to 10.
''It's good to mix the grid to increase the competition and make racing better'', he added.
Mr Vicky said the winner of the Junior cup would get full scholarship worth Rs 2.4 lakhs for the next grade event, the J K Tyre national Road Racing championship, xomprising six races.
The second finisher would get scholarship for four races and the third would stand to gain two races.
Apart from this, winner of each race in Junior Cup would get Rs 10,000, runner-up Rs 7,000 and third place finisher Rs 5,000.
The best eight results of the ten would be taken into account for deciding the overall winner.
