Chennai, Nov 28 (UNI) Former President A P J Abdul Kalam today said the recent breakthrough in research of producing stem cells from human skin, virtually identical to embryonic stem cells, would eliminate the danger of immune system rejection.
It would also totally eliminate the hassle of using human reproductive material altogether - no egg, no embryo and no cloning technique, he said after inaugurating ''Tri Cell'', a stem cell therapy centre at Sri Ramachandra University.
He said there were still problems like reprogramming procedure which could take many years before it was made safe for humans.
''A basic question to be solved is how similar these cells are in behaviour and potential to regular embryonic cells that the scientists have been studying for nearly a decade now,'' he said.
This improtant problem should be addressed by the medical community and researchers who should also think how the new discovery would change the storage and use philosophy of umbilical cord blood stem cell.
Tri Cell Vice Chairman S Abhaya Kumar said Tri Cell would in various stages, enable stem cell transplantation for haematological problems and malignancies besides facilitating stem cell transplantations for other specific disorders.
