Bhubaneswar, Nov 28 (UNI) The Sikhya Sahayaks( contract teachers), today called off their strike after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced in the Assembly that the Shikhya Sahayaks will become regular primary school teachers after completing six years of their service.
Mr Patnaik also raised the monthly honorarium of the teachers from existing Rs 2000 per month to Rs 3000 per month. On completion of three years of service it would be increased to Rs 3,500 per month which would be made effective from December 1.
The teachers had literally laid a siege on the M G Marg and sat on an indefinite dharna in front of the Assembly since November 26 demanding regularisation of their services.
Vehicular traffic had been thrown out of gear as around 30,000 teachers from almost all the 30 districts of the state boycotted their classes and squatted on the road.
The government had announced a monthly salary of Rs 3,600 to those teachers who have completed five years of service and have decided to regularise their service on completion of nine years of service. But the teachers had rejected the offer.
