Baramulla, Nov 27 (UNI) A fierce encounter was going on between the militants holed up in a house and security forces in north Kashmir, a senior police officer said.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) for north Kashmir said Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and 52 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) launched a joint operation at village Chenad in this district this afternoon following a tip off that some militants were hiding there.
He said when the security forces were about to storm a particular house, they came under heavy fire from militants. Security forces further tightened the cordon around the house of Ghulam Hassan Lone.
Efforts are on to force the militants to surrender, he said adding the civilians living in the nearby houses were rescued to safer places.
The officer said it is believed that two militants are inside the house.
This was the fourth such incident in north Kashmir during the past one month. In three earlier similar encounters, more than a dozen militants besides half a dozen security personnel, including a Major were killed.
