Varanasi, Nov 27 (UNI) A magisterial inquiry was today ordered into the alleged assault of some journalists by a ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA and his accomplices late last night here.

Shamsher Bahadur Singh, an MLA from Jalalpur area of Ambedkar Nagar district, and his aides had roughed up some electronic mediapersons with rifle butt during a wedding ceremony.

Later, they also held captive the journalists, sources said.

The incident occurred in Pandeypur area during the reception ceremony of a college lecturer Dr Pawan Singh, native of Ambedkar Nagar.

Pawan was remarrying after getting divorce from his first wife Anupama by a lower court in May.

However, Anupama had challenged the lower court order in the High Court and reached the venue on getting the information about Pawan's remarriage.

The mediapersons, who rushed for news coverage, were assaulted by the MLA and his accomplices.

Meanwhile, several scribes sustained injuries today after police used mild force to disperse a mob of agitating journalists, who were demanding the arrest of the accused and planning to burn the effigy of UP Chief Minister Mayawati at the district headquarters.

Scores of mediapersons sustained injuries and were admitted to a private hospital.

According to sources, the condition of some of the electronic mediapersons and photographers was stated serious.

Counter FIRs had been lodged by the mediapersons and BSP MLA supporters at Cantonment police station.

Meanwhile, the activists of Jagriti Foundation also set afire the effigy of the BSP MLA in several areas and condemned the assault on scribes.
