New Delhi, Nov 27 (UNI) Northeast-based organisations today condemned the violence and stripping of an Adivasi woman in broad daylight in Guwahati and demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident.

''The barbaric manner of local residents chasing 250 Adivasi men and women, who were protesting for their demand in a democratic manner, and stripping a woman protestor by a local Assamese business man and kicking at her belly is unacceptable and must be punished according to law,'' they said in a statement here.

The incident occurred when the All Assam Adivasi Student's Association (AAASA) were taking out a peaceful rally after holding an assembly with permission from local authorities to demand Schedule Tribe status for the community in Guwahati on November 24. They demanded the Assam Government pay compensation as per SC/ST Prevention of Atrocity Action, 1995, to the bereaved families and the injured in the violence.
