Karunanidhi launches phase-III freebies distribution

Chennai, Nov 27 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today launched the third phase of distribution of free CTVs and the second phase of free gas stoves to the poor, the popular poll promises that catapulted the DMK to power in May 2006 Assembly polls.

Under the scheme, about 34.25 lakh CTVs and eight lakh gas stoves were distributed to the poor people across the state by Mr Karunanidhi in the city and his cabinet colleagues across the state.

As promised in the election manifesto, the DMK government soon after coming to power, launched the free schemes and had so far distributed 23,79,721 CTVs and 3,00,560 gas stoves.

A committee of legislators, led by Mr Karunanidhi had recently decided to procure 34.35 lakh CTVs at a cost of Rs 750 crore for distribution.
