Three arrested for stripping women, govt gives Rs 1 lakh

Guwahati, Nov 26 (UNI) Guwahati police last night arrested three youths for allegedly stripping an adivasi woman on Friday in the Beltola areas of the state capital when the people attacked adivasi protestors.

''We have decided to give her Rs 1 lakh as compensation. I am horrified by the incident. I was shown the video footage and I found that those behind the incident looked like descent man. I told the police to find them out within 24 hours,'' said an angry Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to UNI this morning.

All the three were picked up by police last night. Two of them are shopkeepers of Beltola area. The main accuswed was Anil Burman of Nalbari area.

According to official sources, as the protestors fled from the violent scene on Friday, the locals attacked the protestors and one Anil Burman allegedly stripped the adivasi woman.

Soon it became a fun for a few and the woman was completely stripped and she ran for cover amid horror of the others.

She was rescued by other local people and given clothes. Later she was given refuge by Assam Labour Minister Prithivi Majhi and his wife gave her fresh clothes before she was sent back home.

The identity of the women was not revealed, but the Chief Minister while announcing a judicial inquiry into the whole incident said Rs 1 lakh would be given to the victim.

''I cannot believe how people can be so inhuman and barbaric.

Everybody seems to have lost their sense,'' Mr Gogoi said. However, there was some tension in the Beltola area this morning following the arrest of the three accused.
