Patiala, Nov 26 (UNI) Railways were shot out for a paltry score of 137 by the formidable Uttar Pradesh on the opening day of the 4-day tie in Cooch Behar Trophy (Under-19) here today at the Dhruv Pandove Cricket Stadium.
Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Railways batsmen failed to capitalize on a perfect batting track and wickets fell like nine pins. Manoj Kumar (44) was the only Railways batsman who played the penetrative UP bowling attack with some degree of confidence.
Prashant Awasthi (21) and Saroj Kumar (14) were the other Railways batsmen who got into double figures without showing any sign of a fightback.
For UP, off spinner Sunil Tripathi, who bagged 5 wickets, conceding only 12 runs, was almost unplayable on a placid wicket.
Bhuwaneshwar Kumar took 3 for 51 to polish off the Railways innings.
In reply to Railways' modest total, UP were 131 for 3 at stumps.
Akash Verma gave UP a flying start, scoring a breezy 67, which comprised 6 boundaries and a huge six.
Ankit Tiwari, who hammered a century in the previous match against Goa, is unbeaten on 42, while in form batsman Umang Sharma is on one not out.
For Railways, Sheeshpal, A Kumar and A K Pathan bagged a wicket each, but showed no sign of running through the UP innings. When the play resumes tomorrow, UP batsmen are likely to score heavily against a depleted Railways attack.
