Shillong, Nov 26 (UNI) Property worth several crores were gutted, when a major fire ravaged a cloth shop, a tobacco and electronic goods godown at police bazaar, the commercial hub of the state capital of Meghalaya here today.

Apart from fire stations being pressed into service here, fire fire tenders were also summoned from Army and Air Force to douse the flames, which could be put out only after six to seven hours.

However, no casualty was reported.

Quoting eyewitness, Superintendent of Police Fire and Emergency Service Debangshu Sangma said that around 0230 hrs thick clouds of smoke were spotted billowing out from the cloth shop.

''The flames spread like a wild fire due to the wooden structures and cloth stuffs, which even intensified the fire,'' Mr Sangma told UNI.

However, Mr Sangma said the police are investigating the incident to ascertain the cause of the fire. ''We are not ruling out the possibility of it being an accident caused due to an electric short circuit,'' he added.

Meanwhile, business remained paralysed in most parts of police bazar area, with most shopkeepers keeping their shutters down.
