Guwahati, Nov 26 (UNI) At least one person was killed and half a dozen injured in sporadic incidents of violence during the All Assam Adivasi Students' Association(AAASA) sponsored 36-hour Assam bandh called here from today.
Police sources here said the Adivasi protestors attacked two vehicles at Karigaon in Kokarjhar on National Highway 37, killing one on the spot and injuring two others.
There were also reports of violence from Dhekiajuli, Behali.
Golaghat and Sibsagar areas of Assam. Extensive security arrangements had been made throughout Assam in view of the Assam Bandh.
The authorities were fearing a backlash in the Adivasi-dominated areas, as tribal protestors were allegedly assaulted by an irate mob after they ''vandalised'' a large section of Guwahati, demanding Scheduled Tribe status.
Altogether, 280 people were injured and one was killed in Friday's violence. To protest this attack, the Assam bandh was called today. So far in the Guwahati city, there have been very little impact over the bandh.
The bandh has paralysed life in most parts of Upper Assam, northern bank of river Brahmaputra as well as some parts of Surama valley. The bandh has, however, little impact in NC Hills, where elections at the district council level was going on as well as in Guwahati.
