Chennai, Nov 26 (UNI) Textile showroom major Chennai Silks has designed the world's expensive silk sari, the first of its kind, at a whopping Rs 35 lakhs.
This ravishingly splendid silk sari is laced with 12 precious stones and features 11 fabulous paintings of Raja Ravi Verma.
For the first time the showroom designed and manufactured a jewellery interwoven handloom silk sari, using double warp.
It was unveiled by eminent actor-director Suhasini Maniratnam in the presence of Chennai Silks Directors Chandran, Manickam and Sivalingam.
Speaking on the occasion, the Directors said sari is a traditional women's wear in India that has uniqueness in many aspects. ''We have been known for weaving wonders. Now we will be known for weaving history because history is not always written, sometimes it's woven'', they added.
This is the first silk sari manufactured using 7440 jacquard hooks, (1200 jacquard hook box 5 numbers, 480 jacquard hook box three numbers) and 66,794 cards (with 600 punches in each card).
The sari is also the first of its kind as the weaving process has integrated jewels made of 12 precious substances like platinum, diamond, gold, silver, ruby, pearl, coral, topaz, cat'seye, blue sapphire, yellow sapphire and emerald using intricate hand woven process.
It took 4680 man hours to complete the sari, which contains gold (59 gms 700 milli grams), diamond (3 carats 913 cents), platinum (120 milli grams), silver (5 grams), ruby (2 carat 985 cent), emerald (55 cent), yellow sapphire (3 cent), sapphire (5 carat), cat eye (14 cent), topaz (10 cent), pearl (2 gms) and coral (400 milligrams).
This unique silk sari features 11 paintings of Raja Ravi Verma, a tribute to the world renowned artist. One of the paintings the sari replicates is Raja Ravi Verma famous ''Lady musicians'', featuring women musicians from various cultural backgrounds. The sari's border features another ten paintings by the great artist.
The integration of gold in the silk sari makes it unique and valuable. The weaving process is very sophisticated and the method used is actual interweaving of jewels.
The sari could be worn like a normal sari and the wearer will be the cynosure of all eyes.
The sari would be a unique drape for a bride during wedding.
