Mumbai, Nov 26 (UNI) Karnataka pipped Maharashtra 91-83 in a thrilling men's tie for their first win, in the 3rd All India United Phosphorous Savio Cup Basketball Tournament, at Don Bosco School here today.
Karnataka, who lost their opening match against National Champions Services yesterday, endured a surprise challenge as they led 43-37 at half time after Maharashtra ran them close in the opening two quarters.
The visitors returned to dominate the third quarter to lead 71-52, before the hosts, who crashed to their second defeat in as many ties, initiated a late challenge in the fourth quarter for a tight finish.
Tinu (23), Uma Sankar (17), Nixon (15) and Sanjay Raj (9) were the significant scorers for Karnataka, while Suraj Shetty (14), Surabh Nisar and Mahesh Nagane (13 each) and Sanjay Salunkhe (12) contributed for Maharashtra.
In a late Sunday night tie, Kerala opened their campaign with an 81-56 win over Maharashtra, after leading 51-31 at half-time.
Kerala got off to a good start and dominated the opening two quarters, before Maharashtra recovered in the third quarter. But Kerala took it away in the fourth quarter to seal a comfortable win.

Kerala 81 (Sadat Kharadi 20) bt Maharashtra 56 (Bobit Mathew 19, Manoj Abraham 12). HT: 51-31.
