AIADMK wing slams TN Govt for not protecting fishermen
Tiruchirapalli, Nov 26 (UNI) The local unit of the AIADMK's fishermen Wing condemned the Tamil Nadu Government for allegedly not taking any initiatives for protecting fishermen, especially those from the state, from the Sri Lankan Navy.
In a statement, District AIADMK Fishermen Wing Secretary Perur N Kannadasan said a resolution to this effect was adopted at the office bearers meeting held here today.
He claimed that Indian fishermen were harassed by the Sri Lankan Navy almost daily.
Despite this, the DMK Government in Tamil Nadu 'remained a silent spectator' which was highly condemnable.
The meeting also condemned Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and Union Shipping Minister T R Baalu for their adamant attitude in implementing the Sethu Samudram Shipping Canal Project (SSCP)'without bothering about fishermen's livelihood.' The meeting also strongly condemned the DMK Government's failure on different issues confronting the fishing community such as supply of petrol and diesel on a subsidised price as in the case of the previous AIADMK regime.
The meeting appealed to the Tamil Nadu Government to declare and celeberate September 21 as World Fishermen Day.
