Punjab gain first innings lead over UP in Ranji tie

Mohali, Nov 24 (UNI) Brilliant knocks by Ravneet Ricky (76 not out) and Ravi Inder Singh (62) enabled Punjab to score 238 for 7 in 83 overs in their second innings against Uttar Pradesh on the penultimate day of their four-day Elite Group B fixture in the Ranji Trophy at the PCA Stadium here today.

The hosts are now leading by 244 runs and with three wickets in hand.

Having gained a slender six-run first-innings lead, Punjab skipper Pankaj Dharmani made slight changes in the batting order for the second innings. Sunny Sohal (33, 6x4s) and Karan Goel (10) opened the innings. This pair put on 37 runs before Karan was bowled by UP medium pacer Praveen Kumar (2 for 28).

With the addition of 11 runs, Sohal also returned to the pavilion by contributing 33 runs. He stayed at the wicket for 68 minutes and faced 43 deliveries and slammed six fours.

Dharmani (15) and first innings centurian Uday Kaul (0) quickly returned to the pavilion.

Regular opener Ricky (batting 76, 9x4s) came at number five down to join Ravi Inder Singh (62, 191 minutes, 143 balls, 9x4s). They were associated in a 74 run stand for the fifth wicket. They carried their team total to 166 for 5.

Piyus Chawla (3 for 50) broke their partnership when he had Ravi Inder caught by Amir Khan. At close, Ricky was batting on 76 and giving him company was Charanjit Singh on 8.

Earlier, UP could add just 23 runs and losing the remaining three wickets. The visitors were all out for 375 in their first innings in 70.1 overs.

Overnight not out Chawla made 38 before he was caught by Kaul of the bowling of medium pacer V R V Singh who wrecked the UP innigns by taking seven wickets for 112 runs from 21.1 overs, two of which were maiden. Praveen Kumar, overnight 20, remained not out on 34 with five fours.
