Kolkata, Nov 25 (UNI) A city court today sent All India Minority Forum (AIMF) president Idris Ali, who was arrested yesterday on charges of instigating the violent outburst that erupted in the city on Novermber 21 over the demand for removal of controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen, to police custody for three days.
Mr Ali was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's (CMM) court amid tight security this afternoon as hundreds of AIMF supporters shouted slogans outside the court demanding his immediate unconditional release.
Mr Ali was charged with non-bailable offence for inciting the violent uprising in which at least 75 people were injured and 40 vehicles damaged.
He was also suspended from the Congress for organising the demonstrations without giving prior intimation.
Mr Ali pleaded ignorance when he was produced before the CMM.
The court, however, remanded him to plice custody till November 28 as the prosecution opposed his bail plea.
